Gloire de Dijon

Several times regarded as one of the most beloved roses in history (D.H. Lawrence once wrote an astoundingly sensual piece in its honor), this one had to be a part of my collection, even though most rational people would not try to grow it this far north.

Since I make no claims about my own rationality, I decided to buy one as an experiment. This is a large variety, capable of climbing two stories in the right growing conditions. It seems unlikely to do so in my climate, but to give it a fair chance, I purchased an enormous (90-something gallon) galvanized stock tank, drilled draining holes, mounted wheels, and now have a mobile planter suitable in size for growing this variety with a few companion plants… and when winter hits, I can simply wheel it into the garage for a few months of napping. Stay tuned this spring for updates on its welfare…
